Party out the credit crunch
November 19, 2008
The economic outlook has never been as gloomy as it is these days. Or at least, that’s what we’re being told every day on the news, in the papers and at the coffee machine at work. True, the Big Crunch will make for a rather uncertain situation in the years to come, I’m actually rather optimistic that this shocking correction of the markets will eventually lead to a better world, in which we will see much less of exorbitant high bonuses and 20 something year old city high flyers who effectively contribute absolutely nothing to society. I’ve asked myself the question over and over again why we live in a society that accepts the fact that people who are doing research to find remedies for cancers earn about 1/5th of that of an insurance broker, who’s main task it is to spend as less money as possible to make sick people healthy again. Of course, this is all not as black and white as I picture it now; it should give some of something to think about though.
The good news of the crunch is that sales have started really early this year, with loads of shops offering pretty good discounts, and in some cases, free champagne to shoppers. I was quite pleased to find myself in Kings Road last week where I was on my way to a party. Whilst walking down the road to what turned out to be a rather unpleasant social gathering in a private member club, me and my housemate made several stops down the road; Ted Baker 20% off and free champagne, after that some kind of Italian Bag shop, which offered free champagne and nibbles. Further down the road downed some cocktails for the lovely price of 2 for a tenner. With people ‘tightening their bellies’ as it is being lovely referred to in some of London’s quality free newspapers, my bellie, at the end of the evening felt anything but tightened.
More good news came in my inbox today. First of all there’s a 40% off wines and champagnes at Treshers, Wine Rack and Victoria Wine (see attached voucher)
and also Selfridges are offering a 20% discount on everything instore from November 24th onwards: print your voucher at http://www.selfridges.co.uk/index.cfm?page=1368.
The crunch might kick in, the party will go on.
